Lawyer, Portalis was a practitioner, who along with four other practitioners became entrusted by Napoleon, the task of drafting the "Code civil" (Civil Code). It was enacted in 1804. Portalis is the most famous of the four, because of his "Discours préliminaire au premier projet de Code civil") (Preliminary Discourse on the first draft of the Civil Code). This text, which as a whole and in each of its sentences, is a reference to the art of making laws. Portalis is buried in the "Panthéon" (Paris).
